Designing process

An alternative Olympic variant of the final design; an Energia-issued medal and the Mai 6th logo.

The Soyuz TMA-11M patch was designed by Luc van den Abeelen. Commander Michail Tyurin indicated that (just like in his Soyuz TMA-9 patch) he wished a reference to the MAI 6th Faculty of the Moscow Aviation Institute that he graduated from. Luc combined the Mai 6th logo with elements from a 1994 RSC Energia-issued medal.

Since this flight would carry the Olympic torch for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games to space, several Olympic versions were proposed. The final design was approved by the crew on June 3, 2013; by Roscosmos and TsPK on June 19, 2013. It was revealed by Spacepatches.nl on July 27, 2013.
